Shared Hosting

Uploading your website to the Internet is not a complex process so long as you use a reliable "FTP" client.

FTP means "File Transfer Protocol" and is one method used to transfer files to the Internet.

When you upload your website or updated pages you are simply copying files from your computer to a server where they will become visible on the World Wide Web.

At Hansam we use WS-FTP as our FTP client and we have found this product to be reliable, easy to use and it is not expensive. You can download trial versions to "try before you buy".

Alternatively you can try Cute FTP which is also a good product.

To upload to the Internet you will need your FTP login details which we can supply. These consist of:

FTP Address (ftp.yourdomain.co.uk)
Username (yourdomain.co.uk)
Password (whatever has been assigned)

A website is made up of images and page files of various types. Normally the images are stored in an image folder and the pages are stored in another area.

When the website is created on your computer, the structure must be the same so that the website functions properly when it is uploaded to the Internet server.

A simple test can be carried out to demonstrate this. Go to any website and click the right mouse button when you are hovering over an image. You will see a menu - click "Properties" and the following screen will be displayed:

In this case the image "logo.gif" is stored in the images folder on the Internet server.
